Finding God in the simple things

Updated: Nov 26, 2023

Hey Bestie!

"A simple life in the Fear-of-God is better than a rich life with a ton of headaches." - Proverbs 15:16

Choosing a simplier life isn't just a counterintuitive paradox; it's a profound shift away from the stress-inducing trappings of earthly values. Anxiety is not a Godly emotion; instead, it finds its roots in the temporal. Living by the principles God has taught us offers a pathway to simplicity, a journey where stress fades, and God graciously carries the weight for us. Let's unpack this paradox together, exploring the divine wisdom that guides us toward a life built around God rather than the transient allure of worldly possessions.

Building on the Foundation of Faith

Proverbs 3:5-6 advises us,

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

It's not just a verse; it's a lifeline when stress and anxiety come knocking. Let me share some biblical stories that can be your go-to when the pressures of life start to weigh you down.

1. The Story of David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17)

A young shepherd facing a giant. Armed with faith and a sling, David stood against the towering Goliath. The world saw a shepherd boy; God saw a warrior. When life feels like an insurmountable giant, remember David's courage. Lean into your faith, trusting that, like David, you're equipped to face whatever giants come your way.

2. The Widow's Offering (Mark 12:41-44)

In Mark 12, Jesus observed people giving offerings in the temple. Among them, a poor widow put in two small coins. Despite her meager means, Jesus praised her, saying she had given more than all the others. This story reminds us that God values our heart's intent more than the quantity of what we offer. When life pressures us to give more than we think we have, remember the widow's sacrificial offering and trust that God sees and values your heart's intent.

3. Jesus Calms the Storm (Mark 4:35-41)

When the storms of life rage, turn to Mark 4:35-41. Picture Jesus in a boat with His disciples as a fierce storm arises. In the chaos, Jesus speaks, "Quiet! Be still!" and the storm calms. This story illustrates that even amid life's storms, Jesus has the power to bring peace. When anxiety rises like a storm, lean on the faith that Jesus can speak calmness into your chaos.

4. Paul's Imprisonment and Joy (Philippians 4:11-13)

While imprisoned, Paul wrote the book of Philippians, expressing contentment regardless of his circumstances. In Philippians 4:13, he declares, "I can do all things through him who strengthens me." When the pressures of life threaten your contentment, remember Paul's unwavering joy and the strength he found in God.

Nourishing Our Souls with God's Word

In the simplicity of a quiet moment with God's Word, we find a feast for our souls. Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." It's not just about reading; it's about immersing ourselves in the timeless wisdom that guides our steps. The simplicity of a Bible open before us can bring peace that surpasses understanding.

Living Authentically

Authentic living is a balm for the soul. In a world that often encourages masks, embracing our authentic selves aligns with God's design. Galatians 5:1 reminds us, "For freedom, Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." Authenticity is freedom, a path to true peace and satisfaction.

Dressing Modestly

The allure of lavish items can distract us from what truly matters. 1 Timothy 2:9 offers wisdom: "Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire." Dressing modestly isn't about suppressing style or covering up but embracing a simplicity that reflects inner beauty and humility-not flashy. Being more conscious of what we spend our money on, and how we represent outselves. Instead of being dripped out from head to to in Louie, have you volunteered lately? How do you treat those in need? BOMBTASTIC SIDE EYE. I don't know maybe no side eye if you are doing the Lord's work. But for those of you who don't....side eye.

Being a Good Friend, Partner, and Stranger

Our relationships are woven into the fabric of our lives. Proverbs 27:17 says, "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." Being a good friend, partner, and even a stranger in passing brings a richness that money can't buy. Simple acts of kindness, love, and empathy create a tapestry of fulfillment.

Living in Need, Not Excess

Philippians 4:19 reassures us, "And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." Embracing a life of need rather than excess aligns with God's promise to provide. It's a shift from the world's pursuit of more to contentment in God's sufficiency.

Finding Contentment in Silence

In the noise of the world, find contentment in silence. Psalm 46:10 whispers, "Be still, and know that I am God." In the simplicity of quiet moments, we connect with the divine. It's not about constant noise but about listening to the still, small voice that brings peace.

Bestie, our souls crave the nourishment of God's Word and the simplicity of authentic living. Dressing modestly, being a good friend, and embracing a life of need bring a satisfaction that transcends the material. As we navigate this minimalist journey, let's focus on the simple things that lead to true peace, satisfaction, and fullness.

Blessings,
